1966 Land-Rover Long Wheelbase Safari Station Wagon
Presented by Dare Britannia, the winner of approximately 60 international restoration awards. Restored to a high level in 1990 and garaged ever since with approximately 6,000 miles accrued since restoration. Number 220 of a strictly limited group of 811 produced exclusively for the North American market, this “NADA” or North American Dollar Area 109 retains its original six-cylinder engine, unlike the majority of these machines which have, regrettably, been bastardized with incorrect engines.
The engine was exquisitely and fully rebuilt by the Seattle Land-Rover dealer Rowland Motors and performs excellently. Dare Britannia rebuilt the gearbox, transfer case, front output housing and rear differential. At all times during its ownership over the past twenty years all engine peripherals demonstrating the need have been also rebuilt to the highest standard. We also completely stripped and fully rebuilt the front axle with new steering stabilizers. The body was stripped to bare metal and all panels were restored to collector/investment quality level wherever required, then glass beaded and aircraft epoxy primed and professionally resprayed in factory original pastel green polyeurethane enamel. Twenty-six hours were devoted just to the masking of all galvanized components prior to the respray. All new weatherstripping, window channel and body seals have been professionally fitted. New original equipment inertial safety harnesses in the front, and new lap belts in the rear cabin. The interior seats and trim have been reupholstered, so that the interior trim is in good condition throughout, with one minor exception. The windshield wiper system has been uprated to later type two-speed motor and switch gear and a custom leather dash was created for the prior owner. The instrumentation consists of in-dash speedometer, tachometer, fuel gauge, water temperature gauge, oil pressure gauge and volt meter. Five nearly new steel radials have only a few thousand miles on them. New Selectro freewheel hubs and military axles. Nearly new FAIREY overdrive operates flawlessly and is the quietest I’ve heard since they began being produced. Uprated with alternator. All new bespoke expedition road springs and new shock absorbers. Freshly and professionally restored fuel tank and radiator. The all new Genuine Rover exhaust system was recently installed and is in fine condition. Professionally fitted marine carpeting with thermalcoustic insulation throughout.
Virtually all the work listed has been professionally carried out. This vehicle is a fine example of a nice older but very low-mileage restoration, and is almost certainly one of the finest examples available anywhere today.
