1981 Airportable

Picture
Entirely exceptional Land-Rover airportable! This is almost certainly the only airportable (also known as the "Lightweight") of its kind in North America. Left-hand-drive, with awesome Rover turbo diesel. Engine which was installed by fanatical British engineer with professionally constructed bell housing adapter & ancillaries kit. Recently new canvas top(with roll-up sides and rear panels) and four fresh radial tires on wide offset rims with virtually full tread [.425” tread depth]. Recently passed the very strict English MOT test. VERY cool machine! Mileage showing: 34,332 miles [55,250 Km], which is very probably genuine because of its ex-ministry status.

Features include: peppy, tight, awesome, clean-burning, rugged, direct-injected, 2-litre Rover turbo diesel engine with quick-start glow plugs, (the engine starts right on the button in about 3-4 seconds EVERY time); BOSCH fuel injection system and electrics, vacuum-assisted dual-circuit power brake system with over-sized (long wheelbase) master cylinder, front brake drums, shoes & wheel cylinders, 24-spline heavy-duty military front & rear axles, dual military fuel tanks, four new seats [please inquire], and recently-acquired front bumper over riders [please inquire], rear bumper over riders, recent brake job with all new wheel cylinders & all new shoes, deep-water military axle wading kit on both front & rear axles, SUPERWINCH freewheel hubs, LUCAS H4 quartz-halogen headlamps, military convoy light, [pair of] red “rear guard” fog lamps (these could be converted to backup lamps with our set of clear lenses, available extra), trip-resettable odometer/speedometer, huge KENLOWE-type tropical [radiator] electric cooling fan, improved anti-burst door latches, boomerang-type [springback], over sized [6‚” x 9‚”] door-mounted military mirrors (one has a crack in the glass), three-point safety belts with raised factory anchor system, very rare factory bug screens, military gun bracket, recent leather wading gaiters on swivel balls, 50 mm tow hitch ball & EEC trailer wiring. Freshly installed, improved-type military rebuilt all-synchromesh transmission. (The original one worked o.k. but the synchros were lazy). Absolutely awesome vehicle with zippy acceleration, excellent road manners, awesome brakes, light, precise steering [you’d swear it has power steering!!]

This machine is narrower than a standard Land-Rover by four inches so it will fit through even tighter spots off-road. The entire superstructure of this machine is field-strip-able which makes it considerably lighter during maneuvers. This brilliant Land-Rover has just been treated to more than $5,600 in professional labor and new parts within the last 100 miles. Available at extra cost: rear two-passenger seats, accelerator, brake & clutch pedal pads, floor mats, lockable bonnet spare tire mount, set of clear lenses for backup lamps, pick & shovel (“pioneer kit”) for the rear tailgate.
