1966 6-Cylinder Station Wagon N.A.D.A.
1966 Land-Rover 6-cylinder Safari Station Wagon. Number 177 of only 811 produced. With 85,000 recorded miles. Apparently last registered in 1975, although the vehicle may have been driven off road unregistered for some time subsequent to that date. Prior history is not extensive. Completely disassembled until recently. Most parts stored indoors. Chassis and axles sand blasted and resprayed with 5 coats of marine polyurethane enamel. Wheels similarly resprayed. The road springs have been completely disassembled, sand blasted and reassembled, with fresh polyurethane bushings throughout, consequently the Land-Rover sits level, as it should. A fine new fuel tank has been fitted. This machine is largely complete and correct with only a few parts missing…..the spare wheel, air cleaner, prop shafts, radiator, generator, brake servo, etc. Fortunately all ten original seats are present and trimmed with the original factory “Elephant hide” material, which, equally astoundingly, are in essentially fine condition with a few minor exceptions. The headliners and other interior trim require attention. All original glass. This machine will require complete recommissioning. All rubber seals will need to be replaced, as will the window channel and weather stripping around the doors.
The excellent news is that the original panel work is exceptionally straight (although not perfect, it is close), and corrosion-free, with but a few notable exceptions. The dash, or firewall, is chiefly straight, largely rust-free and requires but a moderate amount of attention. Similarly, the radiator support panel [all steel], shows no penetrating rust whatsoever, and will require but a few hours of restorative attention. Moderate but completely restorable spots of rust have been found in isolated areas of the doors and in other areas of the vehicle, but the vast majority of the vehicle’s structure should be considered unusually sound. Some cracks have been found in the rear door, which will require welding, or the door may have to be replaced. New and correct Safari (rear end) doors are available directly from British Northwest stocks……..unavailable from any other supplier!!
The engine is seized so the condition of the drive line is rather obviously indeterminate. The original six-cylinder engine has been retained and will require a full rebuild. British Northwest */will not /*consider “repowering” this fine machine for any reason, or for any price. I recommend that the gear box be disassembled and rebuilt as required. The differentials should at least be removed, inspected and resealed. The wiring harness, while present, should be replaced with new. We have these available, in fact the missing components are available directly from Dare Britannia, Ltd. stocks currently held.
These superlative machines were, and are, in a class by themselves. A colleague of mine, formerly a technician at a nearby Rolls Royce dealership, assured me that the Rover six-cylinder engine had no equal for smoothness in the Rolls Royce product lineup, nor have they ever! Dare Britannia has rebuilt these engines formerly, and are now actively engaged in the full restoration of another “NADA six for yet another client. We specialize in the six-cylinder engine and have approximately a dozen in stock at present. Originality and correctness */will not /*be compromised, but we will consider modest and tasteful upgrades to such areas as the rear axle (upgraded to Salisbury), the brakes shoes, with improved lining materials, the brake lines, with cupro-nickel or 304 seamless aircraft stainless steel tubing, etc., etc..For all intents and purposes this unusual machine will be returned to a condition as close to factory original as is humanly possible, with the foregoing exceptions taken into consideration.
Built exclusively for the North American market, these exceptional Land-Rovers exhibited a degree of refinement found in no other Land-Rovers of their time. Interesting, perhaps from an historical perspective is the fact that the original prototype of these marvelous machines was one built for the Queen Mother in 1962. While membership in The Royal Family is not requisite for ownership today, enjoying the fruits of Land-Rover’s finest era of history is yours for the princely sum of…….well, therein lies the mystery of the decade!
Your earnest inquiries are welcome!
