1966 Land-Rover Safari Station Wagon
This exceptional one-owner Land-Rover was variously garaged in America’s Southwest and other non-rust-belt areas: Colorado, Kentucky, and Arizona, to name a few. This remarkable machine has 40,450 original, one-owner miles since new.
The entire interior has been completely reupholstered in all original “Elephant Hide” (NOT imitation, NOT copied, NOT look-alike, NOT knockoff, NOT an inferior, looks-kind-of-close-to-the-original Elephant hide, this is THE ORIGINAL material…..period correct, wears-like-iron , Genuine Land-Rover throughout) seats and door trim panels (NOT the screwed-on, it’s-almost-good-enough, look-alike-imitation item) but remanufactured door trim panels throughout, with all fresh, new headliners and all fresh, correct upholstery wherever required. The original door trim panels….yes, in all original factory “Elephant Hide” have been completely remanufactured and the temple pads have been backed with a safety-derived, impact-absorbing material to minimize the potential for injury, both off and on-road. The last time we did an interior trim (upholstery) restoration of this kind the invoice came to approximately $7,000.00, exclusive of installation cost.
This machine is in exceptional mechanical condition as well. Includes a healthy, robust, original 2 ¼-litre petrol engine, original four-speed factory gearbox, a complete set of recently new road springs, recently new Genuine Land-Rover factory shocks on all four corners. completely new Genuine Land-Rover factory exhaust system (does not include the manifold, which is the original and in fine condition), zero-miles professionally-restored and coated Genuine Land-Rover factory fuel tank, four new DUNLOP Radial Rover tires on original factory rims, with very good (12/32”, 12/32”, 13/32”, & 14/32”) tread on the four tires on the ground, (the spare is not matching but is very good) , fresh complete professional tune up (zero miles since) and full and correct, professional service throughout (zero miles since). All mechanicals are as factory, ie. original factory Lucas generator, original factory Lucas starter motor, original factory Lucas distributor (with zero miles since removal, servicing, reprofiling and refitting) recently rebuilt original factory SOLEX 40 PAIO/6 carburetter, original factory Lucas voltage regulator, original factory AC mechanical fuel pump, original factory SERCK radiator (in fine original condition) original factory Lucas wiring harness, original, dealer-installed and recently rebuilt (zero miles) WARN M-11 freewheel hubs ( the finest freewheel hubs ever fitted to early Land-Rovers), recently new brake and clutch master cylinders, etc. NB: No parabolic springs or other atrocities! To the best of our ability to ascertain, there are no parts on this vehicle from the far east, or India. No bastardization, no modifications, no polarity changes, no “improved” alternator conversions, no conversions of any kind! Period. All instruments in the dash are factory correct and original and in full and proper working order.
All original and fully operational factory ignition and door and locks with a full set of keys. All new window channel throughout… and fully and professionally repainted door channel throughout, prior to replacing the channel. All new door, upper and lower windscreen and dash ventilator seals: zero miles since completion. A very, very few of the peripherals were non stock at the time we took in this wonderful machine but all have now been restored to original factory specification with period-correct, Genuine Land-Rover or original equipment, period-authentic spares.
The panel work has received all fresh exterior Acrylic eurethane single-stage enamel paint in the correct factory original Marine Blue. Absolutely minimal surface rust, with none penetrating ever… and NONE even close. No restoration has been done to the doors: and none has been necessary… and the frames, typically prone to penetrating corrosion, are virtually factory perfect (with recent professional respray to ensure their longevity)! No welding restoration to the firewall... none was needed! Never an accident and NEVER, ever touched with the welder’s torch, because no restorative work has been remotely considered, much less required.
